Wild Dog
by Staff EditorThe African name for the wild dog isn’t that far from the truth. Roughly translated, it means painted wolf,a fitting description for its colorful coat of brown, black and yellow patches. The African wild dog has long legs, a highly developed large jaw and protruding bat-like ears. Though part of the same family as the domestic dog, one notable difference is that the wild dog has four toes on each foot instead of the domesticated dog’s five. They also have bushy tails with patches of white on the tips, perhaps as an indicator to enable other dogs in the pack to spot them.
