• Their expertise in engineering and the sciences enabled them to cover masses of area in a short amount of time. They were very efficient and effective in gathering data scientifically which paved the way for miners and others who moved to the west.

• When dealing with the Native Americans, Thayer’s men dealt with kindness. They were curious but also very cautious in observing from a distance.
