United States got involved in the Vietnam conflict, a decision that undermined its recently gained status as a world super power. The United States initially entered the Vietnam conflict taking an advisory stance. However, by 1965 the American marines were fully engaged in a war against the Vietcong and the number of American soldiers escalated until it reached 500,000.
- With the increased number of soldiers came the increased mortality rate. The Americans soon faced the same problems as the French when they realized the extreme difficulty in fighting an invisible enemy.
