the Union army suffering a high number of casualties (502) and injuries (2700), General Ulysses S. Grant insisted on going forward. He ordered his troops to continue the attacks on Vicksburg, as well as digging trenches and caves to make headway into the land.

• The civilian death toll began to rise as well, as residents began to dig caves and trenches realizing that it was suicide to stay inside their homes with the constant shelling from the Union army.

• Even worst was the impending starvation overcoming both Confederate soldiers and Vicksburg residents alike. Having been reduced to eating scraps of bacon, gruel, and a biscuit a day – Confederate John Pemberton saw no other choice but to negotiate a ceasefire with the Union army. Grant initially said that nothing less then outright surrender was acceptable, but later softened his stance by working out a deal which would ensure the cessation of fighting from the Confederate troops in Vicksburg as well as the release of federal prisoners.

• On July 4th, 1864, Vicksburg fell to the Union.
