The problem was how to move these soldiers, especially those from the Northeast regions, down through the Mid-Atlantic region. Adding to the complication was the fact that Maryland was a slave state that was sympathetic to the Confederate cause.

Unbeknownst to the troops from the North, was that there were angry Confederate mobs waiting in the capitol to disrupt them. The mobs quarreled with the Union soldiers, resulting in a heavy death toll for the army from the north. Despite only minimal recorded deaths, over 100 Union army soldiers went unaccounted for.
