• The problem was how to move these soldiers, especially those from the Northeast regions, down through the Mid-Atlantic region. Adding to the complication was the fact that Maryland was a slave state that was sympathetic to the Confederate cause.

• Unbeknownst to the troops from the North, was that there were angry Confederate mobs waiting in the capitol to disrupt them. The mobs quarreled with the Union soldiers, resulting in a heavy death toll for the army from the north. Despite only minimal recorded deaths, over 100 Union army soldiers went unaccounted for.
