“Little Napoleon” – George McClellan was replaced by General Ambrose Burnside. Burnside wasted no time in moving the army swiftly in hopes to catch Confederate strongholds off guard.

* The Union army’s poor planning would be on display again when his army had reached the Rappahannock River. With no pontoon bridges, the army would have to wait until the bridge was built in order to get across. This caused a great gap in activity for the army and a blow to the confidence of General Burnside. Meanwhile, Confederate Generals had mobilized their troops to defend their strongholds – and were well aware of the impending arrival of the Union army.

* The mission turned suicidal for the Union, as they were thoroughly manhandled by the outnumbered – but organized – Confederate group. In all, 12,000 Union soldiers lost their lives in the ambush. Burnside immediately retreated and led his troops on a month long march in the cold of winter with no plan in mind. This would be come to known as “The Winter of Discontent.”
