-At the heart of the Arab Israeli crisis is the controversy over the holiest of all cities, Jerusalem.
-For the Muslims, Jerusalem is where the prophet Muhammad rose into heaven. For Jews, Jerusalem is where Solomon built the temple.
-After centuries of persecution and with the horrors of the Holocaust, the Jewish survivors demanded a homeland and a return to Palestine.
-After months of massive immigration, the end of World War II brought the Jewish revolt against the British mandate in Palestine.
-The underground Zionist army the Haganah and two militant groups, the Irgun and Stern groups, began to fight for Jewish statehood. Eventually they unleashed a relentless campaign against the British Army.
-As Jewish statehood neared violence between Arabs and Jews erupted. For the Arabs the state of Israel meant the destruction of a way of life that they had known for centuries.
