- The growing power of Germany and the ambitions of the Kaiser began upsetting the balance of power in Europe. The new German navy alarmed the alliance of France, Britain and Russia while the Triple Alliance of Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary together stood firm.
- In 1914 the First World War began when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. Soon after the Austria-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. The problems in Europe soon became a global conflict and troops around the world began to join their allies.
