after the end of World War II, the uneasy Allies, Russia and the United States, became bitter enemies. The relationship between the Soviets and Americans was further estranged by the division of Germany. The silent battle between the United States and the Soviets lasted for the next forty years.
- In October 28, 1962, the cold war escalated when the Soviets began the installation of missiles in Cuba. US President John F. Kennedy was forced to mount a naval blockade on Cuba.
- Both President Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev stood firm each refusing to back down. At the last minute Khrushchev called off the missiles. It is regarded as the closest the Cold War came to being a nuclear war.
