Battle of Chancellorsville took place from April 30th to May 6th, 1983. This key battle pitted “Fighting” Joseph Hooker’s Union army against a vastly undermanned Confederate army.

• Following the Union army on their retreat back, the Confederate troops ended up pushing the Union troops 2 miles away from the battlefield. “Stonewall” Jackson, not satisfied with the progress, decided to go out on a mission to scout out a trail from where he would plan to launch a surprise night attack on the Union army. During the course of this mission, a Confederate regiment from North Carolina mistook Stonewall and his group for Federal troops and opened fire on them. Stonewall was hit, and was wounded.

• Saddened by this development, General Lee vowed to fight on, and he orchestrated a brutal attack that would not only push Union troops further away, but essentially clinch the Battle of Chancellorsville. Altogether, the Union lost 17,000 troops in a humiliating defeat.

• “Stonewall” Jackson would later die due to complications from amputating the arm in which he was shot – an enormous loss to the Confederacy.
