12th, 1860 – South Carolina becomes the first state to secede from the Union, roughly a month after Abraham Lincoln was elected to the Presidency of the United States.

• In the spring of 1861, militia from South Carolina sought to flex their military strength and go up against the Union army.

• These aspirations were spearheaded by newly promoted Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard, who had roughly 6,000 militia men at his disposal as well as 60 pieces of heavy artillery – recently collected from various Union controlled sites.

• Beauregard and the rest of the militia had their sights set squarely on Fort Sumter, as Beauregard sent out a brash warning to Union General Robert Anderson to essentially pack up and leave before further trouble would ensue.
