1980 Iraq invaded Iran. The war came as a result of Iran’s fundamentalist Shiite Muslims and Iraqi’s Sunni Muslims dispute for the heart and sole of Islam and for the control of the fertile oil. The long and violent eight year war caused half a million deaths. At the end, no resolution had been reached. The brutal and destructive war left both Iran and Iraq bankrupt. With little to rebuild from, Saddam Hussein demanded financial aid from his oil rich neighbor Kuwait. When Kuwait refused to support Iraq’s need, Hussein sent his Iraqi troops to invade the nation. In 1990 he annexed the country taking control of its vast wealth and oil. The western nations and half of the Arab world who had supported Iraq during the Iraq- Iran war, turned against Saddam Hussein when he invaded Kuwait.
