-In 1983 an Iranian suicide bomber attacked US marine barracks in Beirut. The attack killed 241 service men.
-Thirty years after the struggle for independence, once again the streets of Algeria are filled with protest following the cancelled elections of 1991.
-In the new civil war between politics and religion over 100,000 people have died.
-In February 1993 a bomb at the New York World Trade Center killed 6 people and injured thousands. The attack was the work of an anti western Islamist militant group. Lead by Ramzi Yousef the bombing highlighted the reality of a broad international terrorist force united by religion.
