Mandela, iconic freedom fighter for black rights in South Africa, started the first law firm in Africa that represented blacks in South Africa tried for crimes under the rules of Apartheid. Mandela would later be arrested for treason in 1964.

• Apartheid was a system that separated whites and blacks. Similar to the segregation era of the United States, black people were treated as subservient members of society who enjoyed very little to no freedoms which were reserved for the white man. Opposition to this policy would result in violent suppression by the South African troops who were known to use live weaponry freely on black protestors and bystanders alike.
