Maryland sympathetic to the Confederate cause and a threat to secede, it was well understood that such a development could isolate the nation’s capitol and leave it vulnerable to attack.

• Pulling an overnight operation, the Union poured troops in train cars into Baltimore, and set up positions and guns on the highest point in the city – Federal Hill.

• The city awoke to a multitude of guns aimed at Baltimore’s city hall.

• The Union army had succeeded in its plan, and sat back and watched as Baltimore became an established conduit of supplies and arms.
