• Union General Ulysses S. Grant sent a proposal to Confederate General Robert E. Lee demanding the surrender of his troops.

• Upon consulting with General Longstreet, Lee responded by asking what the terms of such a surrender would be, to which Grant responded with terms which seemed amicable to Lee.

• Even with such lenient terms, General Lee was not yet ready to lay down his arms.
