1920’s and 1930’s Jimmy Doolittle was one of the greatest aviators with speed records for both seaplane and landplane. He signed up for aviator training in 1917 when he joined the army. In 1922 he became the first man to cross the United States in under 24 hours. In 1929 he earned one of the first Doctorates in Aeronautics from MIT.
- During the Schneider race in Baltimore in 1925, Lieutenant Jimmy Doolittle won by setting a record of 232 miles per hour in a Curtis R3C, which was the last biplane to win that race. He also set new records claiming the Bendix Trophy and the Thomson’s Trophy in 1931 and 1932 respectively.
- Doolittle flew the Gee Bee the most dangerous aircraft during the 1932 Thomson Trophy race, achieving phenomenal speeds.
