once considered the crown Jewel of the British Empire featured roughly 5,000 civil servants from Britain ruling over 300 million Indian inhabitants. While India provided a luxurious lifestyle for the British settlers, most of the Indian population lived in extreme poverty.

• India would gain its independence from Great Britain on August 14th, 1947. Along with the agreement, a portion of India was partitioned off to create a Muslim state, which would be called Pakistan – which too celebrates its independence on the same day.
