1956, after years of Stalin imposed rule, Hungarian students and workers marched for freedom from tyranny. With increased momentum of the protests, Soviet unrest became loud and clear.

• On October 25th, 1956 – the Hungarian secret police force opened fire on the protestors, killing hundreds. The protestors would, however, not back down – as they ransacked the offices of the secret police.

• With the protests now at a fever pitch, Soviet intervention was all but a matter of when, not if.

• 20,000 Hungarians were killed as the uprising was brutally crushed by the Communist regime, and over 200,000 went into exile.
