September 1939, when Hitler launched his blitzkrieg on Poland, the world began to realize that Hitler felt no inhibitions in his pursuit of power.
- Hitler soon represented the greatest threat to the civilized world.
After Poland fell in three weeks France thought it was next. However, Denmark and Norway were invaded first in April 1940. In May the German army pushed westward through Holland and Belgium.
- Great Britain stood alone in Western Europe. While Hitler hoped that Britain would push for peace, the new Prime Minister of Britain, Winston Churchill, had no desire to surrender. Hitler feared the British navy and air force, and therefore chose not to invade but rather to bomb Britain. His decision proved to be one of Hitler’s biggest military mistakes, when Britain survived the attack.
