-In one of Haiti’s many shanty towns the notorious guerilla group Tonton Macoutes, also called bogeymen, was born created by Dr. Francois Duvalier.
-Dr. Francois Duvalier came to power in 1957 and used the Tonton Macoutes as his secret police organization.
-Duvalier ruled Haiti with extreme cruelty and superstition.
-In 1971 Duvalier’s son Jean Claude Duvalier succeeded him as Haiti’s president. Under Jean Claude the ranks of Tonton Macoutes increased to 300,000.
-In 1986, the Haitian people began to rebel against Jean Claude Duvalier and his military. However, they were powerless and the Tonton Macoutes were reborn as a new death squad, called FRAPH they continued the reign of terror.
