this scene, we are introduced to three of the main characters of this movie, starting with Gravis Mushnick (Mel Welles), a strict and very thrifty flower shop owner who condescendingly explains to Siddie Shiva (Leola Wendorff) – who frequents the flower shop to buy flowers for relatives’ funerals – that he cannot afford to give her a discount, despite her high level of customer loyalty.

• Meanwhile, we hear Seymour Krelboyne (Jonathan Haze) singing (…or at least trying to) in the back room of the florist. Gravis, growing blatantly impatient with Seymour’s off-pitch notes as he tried conducting a conversation with Ms. Shiva, walks over to the back of the room to bark at Seymour to “shut up in the back.”

• Directed By Roger Corman features an early screen appearance by Jack Nicholson.
