Gorbachev was the Soviet leader from 1985 to 1991, and will be best remembered for liberalizing the Communist regime of the Soviet Union, softening harsh censorship laws on the Soviet people and giving them a voice, and of course – the crimson birthmark on his head.

• Gorbachev was a key player in ending the Cold War with the United States, however, he is also considered a key component to the Soviets losing their status as a world power.

• Gorbachev’s administration allowed for Soviet people in the Soviet Union and around the world to have a voice and express their opinions freely without fear of persecution. With this change, the Soviets took advantage of this the new found freedom and protested over what they perceived to be slowness in implementing proposed reforms.
