General Irvin McDowell’s tenure ending in humiliating fashion, the Union needed a new face to lead them going forward. President Abraham Lincoln tapped George B. McClellan, the hero of the West Virginia battle, to take control of the reigns and help the Union regain momentum against the tricky Confederate army. On November 1, 1861, McClellan became general in chief of all the Union armies.

• McClellan had a visibly arrogant side to him, which was evident in a letter which he wrote to his wife following his promotion.

• Despite his sense of self-importance, McClellan was a tactical and organizational genius – which is exactly what the Union army needed.
