1989 Aung San Suu Kyi, the icon of Burmese freedom, was placed under house arrest by the ruling military party that had placed strict restrictions on any democratic freedoms or reforms on Burma. She was the daughter of Aung San, who is regarded as the architect of Burmese independence.

• Despite her best efforts to preach non-violence and orchestrate non-violent protests, these rallies would almost always result in violence.

• 10 months into her arrest, her National League for Democracy won the national election in a landslide victory, however the ruling military power simply ignored the result and retained their grip on power.

• In 1995 Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest to the exuberance pleasure of her supporters in Burma and around the world – as the world’s most famous political prisoner was finally released.
