First Aero Squadron was formed under the command of Major Ralph Royce in late 1917. Joining the ranks was a group of brave but untested American aviators. Later on, Major William Thaw and the Lafayette Escadrille became the 103rd Aero Squadron, bringing some needed experience to the American effort with the likes of leading daring air-fighters Captain Field Kindley and Captain Elliot Springs.
