17th, 1908 Lieutenant Thomas E. Selfridge became the first air crash fatality when the Flyer carrying him and Orville Wright crashed to the ground. Orville suffered some broken bones but survived. Unfortunately Lieutenant Selfridge was pulled out of the crash with a fractured skull and did not survive.
