Salvador the military was trained, armed and financed by the United States for twenty years.
-Their official target was the Marxist guerilla group FMLN. However, the military death squads wagged a campaign against anyone they considered a threat to their absolute power.
-Horrified by the situation the Catholic Church in El Salvador spoke out. The military death squads responded by handing out leaflets that proclaimed priests as enemies of the state and encouraged people to be patriots of El Salvador by killing a priest. Leaflets were distributed encouraging the people to be a patriot by killing a priest
-In February of 1980 Archbishop Oscar Romero begged President Carter if the United States to stop funding the revolutionary government junta.
-After Romero’s public cries for help he was killed with a single bullet.
