landlocked sea which lies in Central Asia between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the Aral Sea used to be the fourth biggest sea in the world and now is drying up at a pace which could leave it completely barren within the decade.

Having been severely polluted with pesticides and residue left from weapons testing, the Aral Seas main source rivers the Amu Darya and Syr Darya were diverted by the Soviets in the 1960s, leaving it in a desolate state which has seen all but 20% of its volume left.
