spring of 1968 saw a brief period of prosperity and freedom for Czechoslovakians, as Alexander Dubcek – best known for attempts to reform the Communist rule over Czechoslovakia – took power.

• Dubcek looked to implement more relaxed social reforms including freedom of speech and information. This new outlook was not welcomed by leaders in Moscow, who scheduled a meeting with Dubcek along with other Warsaw Pact (consisting of mostly Eastern Bloc nations) leaders in which they expressed concern over his new reforms and found them to be undermining to Communist ideals. Dubcek did not back down and defended his policies.

• In August, Warsaw Pact soldiers invaded Czechoslovakia in an invasion they deemed “necessary” to preserve idealistic Communist policies.

• Despite pleading from Czechoslovakian people for the troops to leave, the troops remained and effectively ended the “Prague Spring”. The climatic point of this conflict was the suicide of 21-year old Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in the streets of Prague in protest. Over a million people would pass by his memorial to mourn him.
