• Seeing as the Union army consisted of relatively inexperienced soldiers who lacked the elements of speed and surprise, even without any ambushes from the Confederates, it was going to be a tough time moving south.

• Meanwhile, different Confederate elements started to unite slowly but surely to thwart the Union’s advancements. Ambush after ambush dictated bloody battles as the South mounted pressure on the North’s advances.

• The Union salvaged some pride as reinforcements would assist in controlling the battle; General Irvin McDowell even declared victory for the Union – which may have been premature.
