• One of their only hopes to gain a real supply of weaponry was to acquire arms from Europe, in exchange for cotton.

• Cutting off this trade was critical for the Union army. General Winfield Scott would devise a strategy that would seek to not only cut off the Confederate army’s water supply, but to surround and squeeze the life out of them – and with that, the Anaconda Plan was introduced.
