Admiral David Farragut arrived in Vicksburg, Mississippi; he expected the city to surrender in the same fashion that other cities had previously laid down before the mighty Union army. He was in for a big surprise.

• With Union battle ships and guns unable to penetrate Vicksburg, Farragut was left scrambling to come up with alternative strategies as President Abraham Lincoln had insisted on winning the battle in Vicksburg.

• Sensing confusion and contingency planning amongst the Union navy, the Confederates made a bold move when they turned the C.S.S. Arkansas into a figurative battering ram, barreling through the Mississippi with all guns firing at Union war ships. This action resulted in the mass damage of all Union ships in sight, as well as 17 deaths and nearly 50 injuries suffered by the Union.
