• Wave upon wave of Federal attacks could do nothing to put a dent in the Confederate line of defense.

• Adding to the misery was the dry grass conditions, which contributed to fires breaking out on the battlefield. Finding fallen compatriots was nearly impossible and troops on both sides had to wait till the evening for the fires to subside so that they could find their fallen troops.
