1958 Charles De Gaulle became the leader of France. In the meantime the French colony Algeria had been trying to fight France for its independence.
-The French remained resistant in holding onto their colonial city. When De Gaulle visited Algeria he proclaimed that there was only one category of man in Algiers and that was the French man.
-However, Algiers independence was inevitable. Algeria’s nationalist began a brutal uprising in 1954 for the colony’s independence but France was determined to hold on.
-When France sent half million troops the conflict escalated into a war. The French armies matched nationalist terror tactics with violent retaliation.
-When De Gaulle began to realize the inevitability of Algiers Independence he yielded the armies. However, the French population was not in agreement and break away generals lead three white revolts.
