American Airmail Service played a critical role in advancing aviation.

- The post office department expanded its facilities of Airmail Service with support from Congress. In 1922 and 1923 it was awarded the Collier Trophy for important contributions to aviation and in 1926 one of its Airmail pilots was awarded the Harmon Trophy for advancing the cause of aviation. The first commercial mail service flight in the United States took off on February 15, 1926.
