• Belgian Congo was granted its independence in 1960, due in large part to the efforts of charismatic to-be Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Kasavubu.

• Despite their best wishes and interests, the reality was that the Congolese were severely unprepared for self-rule, especially with the blatant lack of educated people in Congo. At the time, there were only 16 college educated Africans in Congo at the time.
