Joseph Haydn Biography

Franz Joseph Haydn was born on March 31, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria. Educated at the Cathedral Choir School of St Stephen's, Vienna, Haydn earned his living initially by playing in street orchestras and teaching. He became musical director (1759–60) for Count von Morzin's court musicians, for whom he wrote some of the earliest Haydn symphonies. He entered the service of the Esterházy’s, a rich and powerful Hungarian family, as musical director in 1761. He stayed with them until 1790, composing over one hundred Haydn symphonies and Haydn piano sonatas.

Written between 1759 and 1795, Haydn’s work ranges from pieces written for the relatively modest local court orchestra of two oboes, two horns and strings, to the greater complexity of his London Symphonies, all twelve written for performance in London under the direction of the German-born violinist and impresario Salomon during the composer's two London visits.

In 1795, Haydn returned to Vienna rich and honored. At this time--in his late sixties--he composed six masses and two oratorios, The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801), which were so popular that choruses and orchestras were formed for the sole purpose of performing these Haydn songs. He died in 1809, at seventy-seven.
