Process of Detoxification

  by Marci Ranzer

Detoxification is the process of removing toxins or poisonous substances from the body. This method of purification can also be referred to as detox. The goal of a detox program is to feel better physically and emotionally once the body is free of toxins.

Such programs are used to treat toxins that may exist in the body due to various harmful elements that may have been ingested into the body. Programs may include treatment for drugs, alcohol or unhealthy eating. The methods used in a detoxification program are aimed at safely eliminating any damaging toxins in the body. This type of program could last for several days or much longer, depending on the particular toxin and the individual’s body.

An important part of a detox program is eating healthy. A healthy diet helps to flush toxins out of the body. The liver is the organ that rids the body of harmful substances. It is important to support the action of the liver while in a program. A healthy diet aids in the liver’s natural cleansing process. Fruits and vegetables are all staples in a detox diet. Fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins and minerals that are important to the body’s pathways, allowing the body to eliminate pollutants. Fruits and vegetables are also important to eat during this process because they are natural and unprocessed. A diet high in processed foods can upset the delicate balance of sodium and potassium in the diet and can increase the amount of acids in the body. Eating healthy foods that are high in fiber help the digestive system as well as help to purify the body.

It is important to eliminate caffeine, dairy products, sugars, cigarettes and alcohol from the diet in order to successfully purge the body of toxins. Meat must also be eliminated in a detox diet because it is a difficult food to digest. Meat could stay in the digestive tract for a long time, therefore slowing down the purification process. By giving the body a rest from meat the body is able to absolve from heavy proteins and the bowels are cleansed.

Enhancing the pathways of the liver is a healthy way to speed up the purification process. Drinking plenty of water is another key factor in a healthy diet aimed at decontaminating the body. There are a lot of toxins floating around the body, and drinking large amounts of water helps to flush them out. If the body is not sufficiently hydrated, the body dehydrates causing irritability, headaches, body aches, pains and constipation. Herbal tea is also an important element used while restoring the body. A balance is restored to the body using natural materials such as herbal tea. Rather than taking prescribed drugs, herbs can be prescribed for different ailments.

A healthy diet is not enough to completely restore the body. Incorporating exercise is also very important. Exercise could include going for a walk, yoga or stretching and relaxation. Stretching kick starts the lymphatic system and aids in this process. Exercise such as yoga helps with the mental challenges that go along with the restoration process. Yoga helps the mind to manage the changes that the body undergoes.

During restoration the body sometimes experiences difficult challenges. These challenges might include headaches and pain in the body. However, pains such as headaches are actually a positive sign. This means that the process is working effectively. Headaches prove that the body is changing and adjusting to a healthier state.

At the end of a detox program the body should feel refreshed, rejuvenated and much healthier. However, it is important not to discard everything that was practiced in the program once it ends. By keeping the healthy practices included in the program, such as eating fruits and vegetables, cutting down on caffeine, exercising, etc; the body remains healthier over a longer period of time.
