Ludwig van Beethoven Biography

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770 to Johann van Beethoven (1740–1792), one of a line of musicians of Flemish ancestry, and Maria Magdalena Keverich (1744–1787). Beethoven's first music teacher was his father, who worked as a musician in the Electoral court at Bonn, but was also an alcoholic who beat him and unsuccessfully attempted to exhibit him as a child prodigy. Others recognized his talent, however, and in 1792 he moved to Vienna to study under Haydn, Mozart and Salieri.

Ludwig van Beethoven music is generally divided into three periods. The first (1792–1802), included the first two symphonies, the first six quartets, and the ‘Pathétique’ and ‘Moonlight’ sonatas, from which his style gradually develops its own individuality. In its second period (1803–12), Beethoven music begins with the ‘Eroica’ symphony (1803), and includes his next five symphonies, the difficult ‘Kreutzer’ sonata (1803), the Violin Concerto, the ‘Archduke’ trio (1811), and the ‘Razumovsky’ quartets. His third great period begins in 1813, and includes the Mass, the ‘Choral’ symphony (1823), symphony no. 9 and the last five quartets. Beginning in 1812, Beethoven was assailed by ill health, including deafness. He did not stop composing, however, until shortly before he died in 1826.
